The complete list of “For a Reason” references

Detail from the Season 2 poster

Detail from the Season 2 poster

I missed the big group rewatch put on by DocArzt and Lostpedia, but I’m going to be starting my own little private rewatch this week, when I’ll be getting the DVDs from the library and watching LOST all over again from the beginning. I probably won’t be writing a lot of commentary (see Fishbiscuitland and the sites listed on the Lostpedia rewatch page if you want to read some terrific rewatch analysis), but one thing I want to do is keep track of all the references that are made to the LOSTies being brought to the Island “for a reason.”

“For a reason” is the phrase that inspired the name of this blog, and I think, more than any other LOST catchphrase, it captures what the central mystery of LOST is all about.

Whenever I come across a character saying that phrase while I’m rewatching the show, I’ll make a note of it here on this post.

I’m curious to see how many times the phrase will pop up.

We first hear Locke talking about “destiny” in his flashbacks in 1×04 Walkabout. It’s not quite “we were brought here for a reason,” but it’s working up to it.

1×05 White Rabbit is the first episode where the actual phrase was used, when Locke asked Jack “But what if everything that happened here happened for a reason? ”

“Everything happens for a reason” was the official slogan of Season 2! You can see the full Season 2 poster (from which the image on top of this post was taken) on Lostpedia.

This post is a work in progress. Check back for updates.

Season 6 promo

This was shown at the D23 Expo (a convention for Disney fans held last week).

Although it was posted on YouTube by a spoiler site, the video itself appears to be spoiler-free. It’s comprised mostly of clips from Season 5, and touches on the main events and themes of that season. It also has a few quick glimpses, from earlier seasons, of some familiar faces that we haven’t seen in a while.

The narrator says:

All the lives on board Oceanic Flight 815 will find the answer to the biggest question of all.

Can’t wait! Less than five more months to go. Ha. Being a LOST fan is like taking an advanced-level course in learning how to cultivate patience.

The LOST Fan-Them

All this guy cares about is LOST. We can relate.

The song is hilarious. It may be the only song ever to find rhymes for “Charles Widmore,” “Sayid Jarrah,” Lindelof and Cuse,” and “Brotha.”

Naveen Andrews didn’t always play killers! In Bride and Prejudice, a 2004 musical Bollywood adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, he played a role based on Mr. Bingley (Darcy’s friend). This clip shows him in an elaborate dance number:

Naveen discussed his preparation for the role in an interview with about.com conducted shortly before the film was released in the U.S.:

Q: What training did you have for the musical numbers?

NA: Oh Christ, well they had the choreographer, Saroj Khan, who does all those Bollywood films and is the best in her field. And I had to train nine hours a day for about 40 weeks trying to get this s**t done. It’s like traditional Indian dance coupled with M.C. Hammer from the early ‘90s, which has to be seen to be believed.

Q: Would you display your dance skills in a club?

NA: Absolutely not.

Too bad!

Here’s something very funny. Someone took the Bride and Prejudice dance number and used it to make a mash-up with the scene in LOST where Sayid tortured Sawyer:

Not the dancing! Oh no! I’ll tell you anything, just don’t make me watch any more dance! Hah.

The mash-up was made by RemieVander; Bride and Prejudice (c) Pathé Pictures International

LOST in a Weird Al Yankovic tune

A short excerpt of this first video was featured in the fan-made video montage shown in Comic-Con. Here’s the whole thing. It’s a brilliant, funny, manic recap of Season 2, set to Weird Al Yankovic’s “Alternative Polka.” The video was made by Robert Montjoy, aka CapnBob.

The previous year, CapnBob had made a video recapping Season 1 to the tune of Weird Al’s version of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” While this one didn’t make Comic-Con, it is my all-time absolute favorite fan-made video ever. Did I mention how much I love this video? Okay, then. Carry on, carry on:

CapnBob can be found in Bobville and on YouTube.

This next video isn’t LOST-related, but just because I can’t get the song out of my head now, here is Queen with the late great amazing Freddy Mercury singing “Bohemian Rhaposdy” at the Live Aid concert in 1985:

LOST on Brokeback Island

A bit of this was excerpted in the Comic-Con montage of fan-made movies. Here’s the whole thing. Very clever editing!

When a fan first posted video on YouTube which showed the whole LOST event at Comic-Con, ABC asked that the parts showing the video segments played during the panel be removed.

Those segments are now showing up separately on YouTube. But they might get pulled too, so enjoy them while you can.

I think this is all of them, except for the one showing the winner of the theme song contest, but if I find any more, I will post them.

This is an ad for Lost University. Enrollment begins on September 22:

This is Mysteries of the Universe: The Dharma Initiative, a fake quasi-documentary TV show (a take-off on Unexplained Mysteries?) narrated in conspiracy-theory tones. It’s the first in a series, and ABC will be releasing more.

They revealed the promo poster for Season 6:

Here’s a montage of fan-created content, some of it very funny:

Here’s another funny one, Michael Emerson’s fake audition tape for the role of Hurley:

Here are two fake ads which, along with the Kate on America’s Most Wanted clip, seem to have come from an alternate timeline. In the first, Hurley appears as the owner and CEO of Mr. Cluck’s, a fast-food chicken place, plugging a new dish inspired by his “recent trip to Australia.” Best line: “Ever since I won the lottery, I’ve had nothing but good luck.” The other ad is from Oceanic Airlines (motto “Our skies lead to your destiny”), proudly proclaiming “30 years with a perfect safety record.”

This video, done in the style of the annual tribute on the Oscars to notable people who have passed away, is “In Memory of” LOST characters who have died. The longest tribute is to Charlie, which may very well be meant as a tease, if the rumors that Charlie is coming back are true.

The promo poster is from Lostpedia.
