The first course at LOST University is now available

LOST University, an elaborate ABC promo site, is now open for enrollment.

After you register, you get a 23-question multiple-choice placement exam which consists of interesting trivia questions about the show.

Some are easy:

Which of the following LOST characters shares their name with a famous philosopher? A. Kate Austen B. John Locke C. Hugo Reyes D. Ben Linus

But many are hard:

There is a picture in Widmore’s office which depicts a polar bear and what? A. A Buddha B. An Ankh C. A pyramid D. The Virgin Mary

I got 16 points out of 23.

How did you do?

Along with my score, I got the message “Sorry, looks like you need a little LOST refresher,” and was shown the video for LOST University’s first course, LOST 101.

Those of you who don’t want to get up early and slog through the rain to the lecture hall are in luck. An industrious student smuggled out a copy of the lecture and made it available for all his dorm mates all over the world — at least until the campus police track it down:

I enrolled in LOST U. under the name SawyersShirt, so wave if you see me in the hall.

Editing to add: Some people received an email that said “the first 108 graduates will receive a hand-signed diploma from LOST University Presidents Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.”

Editing again to add: All the answers to the placement test questions have been posted on DarkUFO.

And again: I’ve posted some screenshots and videos relating to the answers.

Scandal in a church, ammunition, drugs, tranquilizers, brainwashing … and submarine fuel.  Oh, the horror!

Michael Emerson talking about “The Incident”

Ben, to Jacob: "What about me?"

Ben, to Jacob: "What about me?"

I’m still thinking about The Incident.

The last official audio podcast of Season 5, released May 16, 2009, has an entertaining interview with Michael Emerson. He made me laugh again because he appeared to be as amazed by the episode as we were.  He said when he first read the script and saw he would be killing Jacob, he was shocked.

Emerson and his interviewer also talked about the first scene, the one with Jacob and the unamed man I like to call Esau.  The interviewer said that Jacob wearing white and the other man wearing black was a return to the theme of black and white that has appeared in the show before, but that he thought it didn’t necessarily mean that Jacob was good and the other man bad.

Emerson emphatically agreed, and he said, “Our show delights in thwarting those equations.”

I agree also. I’ve seen a lot of theories online that posit that Jacob represents the forces of good, and Esau the forces of evil, and they will have an epic confrontation in Season 6. But I don’t think that’s where the writers are going. At least I hope not.

Emerson also talked about his plans for the summer (now over, alas!). He said he likes to be with his wife Carrie in New York during the summers. They have an enforced separation while LOST is shooting, “so I just like to follow her around during the summer. I like to hold her coat, and fetch her drinks, and be her personal assistant as much as I can.” So sweet! I hope he got a chance to do just that.

He also mentioned he had just finished shooting the character of a radical fundamentalist Puritan in a show for PBS. That should be interesting!

There’s a lot more in the podcast, which is available in the ABC archives:  Official audio podcast of 5/16/09

Mysteries of the Universe — Part 2

People disappear after going on strange job interviews …

The rest of the video clips from Comic-Con

LOST Season 6 promo poster, shown at Comic-Con

When a fan first posted video on YouTube which showed the whole LOST event at Comic-Con, ABC asked that the parts showing the video segments played during the panel be removed.

Those segments are now showing up separately on YouTube. But they might get pulled too, so enjoy them while you can.

I think this is all of them, except for the one showing the winner of the theme song contest, but if I find any more, I will post them.

This is an ad for Lost University. Enrollment begins on September 22:

This is Mysteries of the Universe: The Dharma Initiative, a fake quasi-documentary TV show (a take-off on Unexplained Mysteries?) narrated in conspiracy-theory tones. It’s the first in a series, and ABC will be releasing more.

They revealed the promo poster for Season 6:

Here’s a montage of fan-created content, some of it very funny:

Here’s another funny one, Michael Emerson’s fake audition tape for the role of Hurley:

Here are two fake ads which, along with the Kate on America’s Most Wanted clip, seem to have come from an alternate timeline. In the first, Hurley appears as the owner and CEO of Mr. Cluck’s, a fast-food chicken place, plugging a new dish inspired by his “recent trip to Australia.” Best line: “Ever since I won the lottery, I’ve had nothing but good luck.” The other ad is from Oceanic Airlines (motto “Our skies lead to your destiny”), proudly proclaiming “30 years with a perfect safety record.”

This video, done in the style of the annual tribute on the Oscars to notable people who have passed away, is “In Memory of” LOST characters who have died. The longest tribute is to Charlie, which may very well be meant as a tease, if the rumors that Charlie is coming back are true.

The promo poster is from Lostpedia.
